Sponsorship Program
Over a hundred and eighty children have been sponsored. They are provided food, clothing, basic medical aid and schooling. The project area is called Tebase near Debre Berhan, approximately 130 km from Addis Abeba Ethiopia. The area is a former military training camp. Some of the children are borne from the soldiers, and many do not even know their true father. Many of the children are living either in their grandparents home or with an aunt or uncle or close relative. A great number of their children's mothers have died of AIDS.The average income in the area is 40 Birr which is equivalent of $6 Canadian dollars per month. This area was chosen by Covenant because it is a place where the poorest of the poor live. The average life expectancy is under 40 years old.
We continually hear horrific stories the area. In some homes the children eat food in turn, as there is simply not enough food for all of the children to eat. Prior to Covenant's involvement, there was no school for the children. With our sponsors help, we were able to rent a room were we now teach the children.
A sponsor will get a report from their child twice a year, including an updated picture. The sponsor can also contact the office in Addis and the project area at any time. If the sponsor also wants to visit his or her child, the office in Ethiopia will gladly facilitate that for them.
There are still many more children waiting for sponsorship, and we appreciate your help.
Our next target is called Dredawa, a city in the eastern part of Ethiopia with dire economic need. We are doing a preliminary work in the area to help set up our project. |
